Even the youngest children have some math capabilities. This session will focus on helping teachers understand how toddlers/preschoolers/kindergarteners build number sense. Work with colleagues to improve your own understanding of this developmental sequence and think about how to use it to help children learn.
In this session participants will learn how targeted instruction in peer social skills and emotional literacy improves children’s social-emotional development, the development of friendships and can reduce challenging behaviors. Classroom implementation strategies that can be used across the day will be highlighted with examples, pictures and video clips.
This session will guide participants to use window and mirror texts to promote deep comprehension and vocabulary for all children (preK-2). First, a framework for indentifying window and mirror texts and how they are related to comprehension will be provided. Then, specific examples of discussion moves and graphic organizers that support vocabulary learning, making connections, inference, and critical thinking while using window or mirror texts will be presented. Finally, participants will practice selecting window and mirror texts to meet their classroom needs, and plan discussion moves and graphic organizers to use with them to promote comprehension and vocabulary learning. These selections and plans will be shared and discussed. Feedback will be provided.
