This session will guide participants to use window and mirror texts to promote deep comprehension and vocabulary for all children (preK-2). First, a framework for indentifying window and mirror texts and how they are related to comprehension will be provided. Then, specific examples of discussion moves and graphic organizers that support vocabulary learning, making connections, inference, and critical thinking while using window or mirror texts will be presented. Finally, participants will practice selecting window and mirror texts to meet their classroom needs, and plan discussion moves and graphic organizers to use with them to promote comprehension and vocabulary learning. These selections and plans will be shared and discussed. Feedback will be provided.

These questions and more will be discussed as KSDE and Kansas MTSS and Alignment partner to discuss the Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Third Edition (ASQ: 3) and the Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional Second Edition (ASQ: SE-2) screening tool and how it is used in Kansas.

Then, examples of how specific social justice picture books can be used to teach critical literacy will be provided.
